One of the important recent editions to the City of Chula Vista’s infrastructure was the construction of the State Route-125 toll road (SR-125) traversing the City’s eastern territories. Concerns with regards to the future image of the City and the surrounding planned communities led to the ultimate beautification of interchanges where the City’s communities intersected with SR-125.
Design guidelines encompassed conceptual bridge design, community appropriate landscaping and irrigation design at all freeway exits and entries, hardscape design and a landscape maintenance program. Design elements included bridges, walls, grading, vehicle and pedestrian circulation, and planting sounding barriers for noise abatement.
Scope of work included presentations to Caltrans and the design/build contractors, acting as liaison between the City of Chula Vista and design/build contractors, providing cost estimates, and reviewing the final construction documents. The roadway areas between remain consistent, with low water usage systems and native plants and trees providing a sense of continuity. The final implemented project is a beautiful roadway that connects communities without dividing them.
