WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Program

From 2013 – 2016, DeLorenzo International empowered homeowners to upgrade their yards into beautiful, low-water-use landscapes through San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Program, an award-winning, multifaceted educational experience.

The program educates homeowners through a variety of tools such as the WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series, a four-class series designed to help homeowners convert turf to California-friendly plants; WaterSmart Landscape Design for Homeowners, a three-hour version of the four-class series; and WaterSmart Landscape eLearning Videos and Resources, online, self-paced videos that give homeowners access to professional videos that help create beautiful, low-water-use landscapes.

In 2014, DeLorenzo International was recognized for its outstanding professional achievement by the San Diego Chapter – American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). ASLA presented DeLorenzo International the Award of Merit – 2014 Professional Design Awards for the WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series.

A consultant’s report on the program illustrated that the actual water savings of participants, based on water billing records, was close to a 30% reduction in water use for all customers. DeLorenzo International surpassed the original goal, which was only 25%.

The WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series calculates Water Use Budgets for the existing turf landscape and for the new design. Comparison of the two Water Budgets show that the new plans reduce water consumption in the turf replacement area, on average, by 67%.

The WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series has graduated close to 900 homeowners, and since January 2014, over 1700 Participants have been a part of the classroom programs offered through the WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Program.
